Garden... & neighbors new fence

Hey everybody,

The neighbors told us they were installing a fence ("nothing personal"). They have a grumpy old dog that barks at everything he sees, including the air around him. Anyway...although it's a nice fence, the chain link fence was left up with it and they put the ugly side facing us (backside of the fence with posts), and I don't like the way it looks in the background of the babies' garden. So, I wanted to ask for suggestions on what to plant to take over the fence, something that grows fast with little maintenance, if possible. I heard honeysuckle was good, but it attracts alot of bees/bugs. Any thoughts? I'm still waiting for the garden plants I ordered, two of them are a jackmani clematis (http://springhillnursery.com/jackmanii-climbing-clematis/p/17004/), which might help a little. The girls' tree is so pretty!!! Love, Nan

  1. I think that planting a tree in memory of our lost babies is a great idea. We plan to do that at our new house. You're backyard looks great! You guys must not be in a drought like we are here in FL!

  2. I think the jackmani clematis are perfect flowers for the fence. They are beautiful. Oh, and the turtle with the butterfly is a great addition to the garden and looks so nice at night.

  3. Passion vines! They are so beautiful, grow fast AND attract butterflies (gulf frittalaries use them to lay eggs on). Plus you can string wire horizontally so it will cover the fence faster. When ours get out of control we literally hack it and it survives, so it is hardy. I am out of town for another 2 weeks but will take a picture of mine when I get back if you want.

  5. Your backyard is beautiful. I seem to have a knack for picking out things that get overgrown fast....lilacs. I bought a few last year ($5 each at Lowe's- pink/white/purple) and they were itty bitty last year. This year, they're no kidding 5x the size. Rhododendrons have the same problem (but oh what a wonderful problem to have!). Cherry trees are fast growers as well and when you buy them, they're already 6' tall so would be an immediate solution.

  6. Thanks everybody! I looked into passion vines but I think they only grow in zones 8-10, and I am in 6....hmmm. I will look into your other suggestions too :) Nan
